The Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Act, 2025 supersedes the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), 2005. It is designed to align rural employment with India's "Viksit Bharat 2047" goals, transforming it into an integrated development mission.
Key changes introduced by the Act include increasing guaranteed wage employment to 125 days per rural household annually and shifting to a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) funding model. States are authorized to implement a cumulative 60-day pause in public works during peak farming seasons, and the Act mandates the use of technology like AI-based fraud detection and biometric authentication.
Administrative changes include weekly or within 15 days payment of daily wages and a mandatory daily unemployment allowance if work is not provided within 15 days, with states bearing the liability. The administrative expenditure limit is raised to 9%. Planning is decentralized through Viksit Gram Panchayat Plans (VGPPs), which are integrated with national platforms.
The Act was introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 16, 2025, passed by both houses on December 18, 2025, and received Presidential Assent in late December 2025. More details are available on the PIB website.
