About the Awards

As part of centenary year celebrations of its founder, Ramnath Goenka, The Express Group instituted the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards. The Awards aim to celebrate excellence in journalism, recognize courage and commitment and showcase outstanding contributions and individuals every year.
The most prestigious annual event in the Indian media calender, pays tribute to journalists from Print & Broadcast, who maintain the highest standards of their profession despite being in the face of political and economic pressures, who still manage to produce work that generates and sustains public trust in the media and impact the lives of people.

Award Categories

REPORTING FROM J&K AND THE NORTHEAST

This award will recognize outstanding journalistic efforts from two of the most challenging regions in India for any reporter: J&K and the Northeast.
Print/Digital & Broadcast - The prize money for each category is  1,00,000/-

This award will go to a journalist each in Print & Broadcast media whose coverage of an event or issue stood out for excellence, independence, depth, quality and impact in the national language.

REGIONAL LANGUAGES

This award will go to a journalist each in Print & Broadcast media whose coverage of an event or issue stood out for excellence, quality, independence, depth and impact in the regional languages.

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORTING

This award will be given to an author of an article or series in a newspaper, magazine or television that makes an exceptional contribution to public awareness & understanding of environmental issues. The report/series of reports must be a substantive work that covers a story completely & raises public consciousness & awareness about environment.
Print/Digital & Broadcast - The prize money for each category is   1,00,000/-

UNCOVERING INDIA INVISIBLE

The award will honour substantive Print or television reporting that covers rural issues intelligently. It may be awarded for explanatory or expository journalism & will be judged on general excellence, quality of writing, forcefulness & importance to the public interest.
Print/Digital & Broadcast - The prize money for each category is   1,00,000/-

BUSINESS AND ECONOMIC JOURNALISM

The award will go to a journalist who shows the highest standards of independence, rigour, depth & analysis while covering any aspect of business or economy.

REPORTING ON POLITICS AND GOVERNMENT

This award will go to a journalist each in Print & Broadcast media whose coverage helps develop a unique understanding of politics & the political process.

SPORTS JOURNALISM

This award will go to a journalist each in Print & Broadcast media whose coverage explores new avenues & finds a new direction in reporting sports.
Print/Digital & Broadcast - The prize money for each category is   1,00,000/-

ON-THE-SPOT REPORTING

This award will go to a journalist each from Print & Broadcast whose coverage of a news-break (of a nationally significant event) stands out for speed, maturity, sensitivity, depth, details and investigative skills.

INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING

This award will go to a journalist from Print & Broadcast category whose report investigates an issue of public interest to reveal an aspect/element which has not yet been covered/explored in the media. The report/reports should be substantive work that is original, forceful and has made an impact.
Print/Digital & Broadcast - The prize money for each category is   1,00,000/-

FEATURE WRITING

This award will honour a print journalist for the best news feature that blends rigor of reporting with beauty of prose.
The prize money is   1,00,000/-

FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT COVERING INDIA

This award will go to foreign correspondents in print media for coverage that portrays India to a foreign audience most accurately & sensitively.
Print/Digital - The prize money is  1,00,000/-

COMMENTARY & INTERPRETATIVE WRITING

This award will go to a print journalist/commentator, whose work stands out for clarity, depth, analysis, style and forcefulness of idea/opinion expressed.
The prize money is   1,00,000/-

BOOKS (NON-FICTION)

This award will go to a writer/writers whose published work, through in-depth research & investigation, covers an issue/idea on a scale which newspapers or television channels with their limited space & time cannot aspire to tackle. This award will be for Books published in English language.
The prize money is   1,00,000/-

PRAKASH KARDALEY MEMORIAL AWARD FOR CIVIC JOURNALISM

This award, instituted in memory of The Indian Express's former Resident Editor in Pune, Prakash Kardaley, will honour a print journalist whose sustained effort highlights a civic issue and forces the authorities to find a solution to it. The award aims to recognize proactive local reporting that makes a difference to the lives of the citizens.
Print/Digital - The prize money is   1,00,000/-

PHOTO JOURNALISM

This award will honour a photo journalist for news photograph that captures, in a frame, the drama of an entire story.
Print/Digital - The prize money is   1,00,000/-


Criteria

The criteria for awards in Print & Broadcast journalism are significance of a news story, resourcefulness & courage in gathering information, & skill in relating the story apart from:
1. Degree of difficulty/ logistical challenges experienced
2. Comprehensiveness of the report
3. Resources available and means used for gathering information.
Journalists working for any Indian newspapers/ magazines/ online / TV channels (published/telecast in the country) are eligible to apply. Indian language papers should send in their stories along with translations in English. All foreign correspondents can also apply. If the story is in a language other than English the translations should be sent along with the stories.

Instructions for submission of Entry Form 2016

Please read the Rules for Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards 2016 carefully before you start filling the Entry Form.
All the information must be duly filled in the entry form
In case you haven't uploaded your photograph online, please paste the same in the form before sending the final entry
A print out of the duly filled form must be taken and signed before the sending the final entry
For 'Mandatory Requirement', please ensure you submit typed material only along with the Entry Form
Entry form should be properly filled in, duly signed and submitted along with a recent passport size photograph & 'Mandatory Requirement' either in person or sent by post/courier on or by 5:00 pm, March 31, 2017 on the following address:
